To be carried out by competent persons as described by Clause 1.3.2.4, and conducted at the lessor of one year or X amount of pumping hours, where X is the determined by the age of the pump, seen below

• Equipment up to five years old requires inspecting after 1000 hours

• Equipment from five years old to ten years old requires inspecting after 500 hours

• Equipment from 10 years old requires inspecting after 250 hours

Other circumstances which would require a periodic inspection include:

• Equipment has been remounted onto a new vehicle

• Equipment has sustained major damage

• Equipment has been modified beyond manufacturers specifications

• Equipment has made contact with overhead powerlines

Full details of items to be inspected is detailed in AS 2550.15:2019 Appendix B. These inspections include comprehensive examination of all pump and boom components beginning with audits of the equipment logbook to determine that both pre-operational and monthly inspections have occurred as well as to observe any defects which have already been recorded. Examination includes but is not limited to:

• Boom stages and links

• Mounting brackets

• Outriggers/support structure

• Safety functions

• Boom stability and speed tests

Any defects that are found or have been found in previous pre-operational or routine inspections that could affect safety must be rectified.

Finally, a certificate must be issued with a dated statement from the inspecting competent person authorising that the equipment is suitable for continued operational service.

To be carried out by competent persons as described by Clause 1.3.2.3, and conducted every month to identify visible wear and areas of potential failure which may require further dismantling in order to inspect in more detail. Found points of failure are to be rectified prior to continuing operation. Items to inspect include, but are not limited to:

• Speed controls

• Emergency and safety devices (including limit switches)

• Full lubrication and greasing of boom

• Check pipe wall thickness

To be carried out by competent persons as described by Clause 1.3.2.2, and conducted prior to every use of the machine to visually identify if any damage has occurred since last operation. Inspection is recommended to include, but not limited to the following

• Operating and emergency controls

• Slew brakes

• Safety switches and interlocks

• Structural members

• Safety stickers

• Operating manuals

• Outriggers/stabilisers

• Access provisions

• Delivery line

• Hopper grate limit switch

A person is a competent person for inspection of plant if they comply with one of the following

• They have qualifications in engineering discipline relevant to the specific plant to be inspected; or

• They have sufficient knowledge of the relevant technical standards for the specific plant to be inspected

A competent person is a person who has eligibility for professional engineer membership with Engineers Australia and has sufficient training/qualification to carry out a major inspection of plant

A competent person for routine inspections: a fitter or mechanic or another tradesperson of a closely adjacent field, with training in inspecting concrete placing equipment

A person complying with the following requirements:

• Professional engineer with sufficient knowledge of the equipment being inspected and familiar with relevant safety information OR a person as defined in Clause 1.3.2.3, which has 5 or more years experience and a minimum of 10 periodic inspections conducted under the supervision of another competent person.

• Must have access to necessary equipment and personnel for the inspection

• Must be sufficiently familiar with any and all relevant manufacturer and industry safety bulletins.

• Must be technically familiar with concrete placing equipment

• Must have access to operating and maintenance information

• Must be impartial to the outcome of the inspection, and maintain no conflict of interest
